Which Golf Ball?
Golfers often ask what ball is best for their game or swing speed and my answer is always the same: “How much are you prepared to spend?” And it really is that simple folks.
As with anything in life you get what you pay for and if price is no object, then the ball for you is the Titleist ProV1 or ProV1x. For every man, woman and child this is the best ball out there! Just check the PGA Tour ball count each week. A dozen will run you in the range of $48 – so no, they are not “giving them away”. If your swing speed is under 105mph with the driver then you should more than likely be using the ProV1 – if above, then the ProV1x. The balls have a slightly different dimple pattern with the ProV1x encouraging a higher and later peak trajectory and the ProV1 pattern being for a more penetrating trajectory in the wind.

If price is a concern, then you could do a whole lot worse than the Bridgestone E6. A dozen of these beauties cost in the range of $27. This is a Surlyn covered, three-piece ball with a dimple pattern that’s designed to generate high initial velocity and a shallow landing angle. The soft mantle works to reduce spin, particularly on driver shots, and thus is often described as the softest multilayer ball on the market. This is an inexpensive multilayer distance ball that has good feel on and around the greens.

Hi Andrew,
I believe Bridgestone have another ball on the market (probably e5 or e7 – my memory is terrible) which is two piece but with a urethane cover. One would suspect that this would provide slower swingers with all the distance they could ever need AND also the ‘ProV’ feel around the greens as well… likely at even less cost.
I was wondering what your thoughts are about this combination (I’ve yet to come across anything similar on the market) and what impact you feel extra layers have on performance – bearing in mind the extra cost.

Matt
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the advice on the “which golf ball”, being a newbie (10 months – 20 handicap) I have a whole lot of questions, but will limit it to a few
. I have often seen websites selling used golf balls, how would you compare a used Titleist ProV1 or ProV1x ($30) to a new Bridgestone E6, is there a difference? During a round what are the factors that lead to deciding that I need a ball change, leaving out the obvious reason like cracks etc.
Thanks!
Regards,
Sim
Hi Sim,
I would always go with a new ball vs a used or refurbished ball! You never know how long that ball may have spent submerged at the bottom of the lake. The only time I change a ball during a round is if I land on a cart path, but other than that I always use one ball for the full 18.
Hope this helps,
Sndrew
This is absolutely ridiculous. The idea that a ProV1 is the best ball for every player just because it’s #1 on TOUR is just plain wrong, and there is science out there to back it. How much is Wally paying you to push those rocks?? I expect more from your blog man.
Sorry to disappoint you there James, but as with the swing, I write my own opinion. It is the best ball out there – show me a better one….!? What science? Oh, and I’d love it if Mr. Uihlein paid me to write about his products. Can you hook me up?
